An Epic Mini-System

This tiny system really trumped some of the larger systems out there costing thousands more. The bass that comes from these speakers is tight, controlled and accurate. If you're on the fence about jumping into this hobby, this is a great place to start. Hell, it's a great place to finish, too.

I'd say that the Audioengine A5+'s give you more than you've given Audioengine. They strike me as the proverbial audiophile bargain capable of delivering musical satisfaction on most levels that count.

If you listen to a wide variety of music in terms of sound quality from streaming services to HD downloads and you like to listen often, paying attention to what and how musicians do what they do, and you enjoy being carried away by the sum of all that goodness (meaning you're also not doing anything else while you're listening), add a DAC.

I’ve been a fan of Audioengine’s A5's since I first laid ears on them in 2006. The A5+'s are worthy successors to the original. I enjoyed their lower-end punch when listening to rock and pop tracks. At the same time, the lows and lower-mids don’t overshadow the highs — the higher frequencies are clearly present.

I have never been more impressed with or more stunned by a component I've reviewed for Stereophile than I was with the Audioengine 2. The level of sound quality produced by this uncolored, detailed, articulate, and dynamic speaker, in all situations, was beyond reproach, and its ratio of value to cost borders on the criminal.

It extended my enjoyment of music into a new realm of portability that I hadn't before thought possible. I can't think of a single reason why every reader of this magazine should not go out right now and buy a pair of Audioengine 2s.

Really easy to listen to, really easy to like

The HD6's sound bigger and more coherent than my memories of the A5+ and they certainly have more grunt, drive, and punch as compared to my tinier ADAM A3X. The new Audioengine's also have a silky smooth sonic character, removing any hints of harshness attributable to the tweeter. As a matter of fact, the HD6's sing as one voice, with nary a hint of their two-way-ness.

Like with Darkthrone, Kingcrow sounded fantastic through the HD6, with the speakers again presenting a very coherent soundstage.

They may very well be the first Audioengine product where you can begin and end your audiophile journey happily. And that my friends is a beautiful thing.

The HD6’s presentation is self-assured with top end detail and the artificial mid-bass hump, as favoured by some designers to rev up the suggestion of bass, is mercifully absent. Both qualities feed neatly into the HD6’s talents with creating a deep and well-specified image on the desktop.
